Sébastien GUIRAL a obtenu son doctorat en 2004 à l’Université Paul Sabatier de Toulouse. Celui-ci portait sur la caractérisation du phénomène dit de fratricide chez la bactérie pathogène de l’homme Streptococcus pneumoniae. Un postdoctorat de 2 ans à l’INRA de Toulouse lui a ensuite permis de mettre en évidence des gènes potentiellement impliqués dans la virulence de la bactérie Mycoplasma agalactiae, un pathogène importants des ruminants. Recruté à l’Université Claude Bernard de Lyon comme maître de conférences, il a par la suite travaillé pendant plusieurs années à la compréhension du rôle joué par des protéines kinases bactériennes, en particulier chez Streptococcus pneumoniae, sur la physiologie bactérienne. Il apporte désormais ses compétences, notamment en génétique bactérienne, à la détermination de la fonction biologique des peptides retrouvés dans les venins de fourmis.
